Ingredients

  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ cup fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cold & cubed
  • ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • ½ tsp black pepper


Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  3. Whisk flour, baking soda, salt, garlic powder, and pepper in a large bowl.
  4. Stir in cheddar and chives.
  5. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  6. Add buttermilk and stir until sticky dough forms.
  7. Shape dough into a round loaf, score an “X” on top, and place on baking sheet.
  8. Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding.
