- 4 cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
- 1 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 ½ cups shredded sharp cheddar cheese
- ½ cup fresh chives, finely chopped
- 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, cold & cubed
- ½ tsp garlic powder (optional)
- ½ tsp black pepper
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Whisk flour, baking soda, salt, garlic powder, and pepper in a large bowl.
- Stir in cheddar and chives.
- Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Add buttermilk and stir until sticky dough forms.
- Shape dough into a round loaf, score an “X” on top, and place on baking sheet.
- Bake for 35–40 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding.
- Cool for 10 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.
