A comforting and flavorful French onion soup made effortlessly in a crockpot.
Ingredients

- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 cup dry white wine
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- 8 slices of French bread
- 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- In a skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat.
- Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper; cook until onions are caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
- Transfer the caramelized onions to the crockpot.
- Add beef broth, white wine, thyme, and bay leaf to the crockpot.
- Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.
- Before serving, toast the French bread slices and top with shredded Gruyère cheese.
- Place the bread on top of the soup in the crockpot and let it melt for a few minutes.
- Serve hot and enjoy!
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, substitute beef broth with vegetable broth.
- Adjust the amount of cheese according to your preference.
- Can be made a day ahead and reheated before serving.
