Description

A comforting and flavorful French onion soup made effortlessly in a crockpot.


Ingredients

  • 4 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 4 cups beef broth
  • 1 cup dry white wine
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 8 slices of French bread
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. In a skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions, sugar, salt, and pepper; cook until onions are caramelized, about 20-25 minutes.
  3. Transfer the caramelized onions to the crockpot.
  4. Add beef broth, white wine, thyme, and bay leaf to the crockpot.
  5. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.
  6. Before serving, toast the French bread slices and top with shredded Gruyère cheese.
  7. Place the bread on top of the soup in the crockpot and let it melt for a few minutes.
  8. Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute beef broth with vegetable broth.
  • Adjust the amount of cheese according to your preference.
  • Can be made a day ahead and reheated before serving.
