Ingredients

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tablespoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/4 cup melted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the eggs and then mix in the buttermilk, melted butter, and vanilla extract.
- Combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients until just mixed.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (175°C).
- Using a doughnut cutter, cut out doughnuts from the dough.
- Fry the doughnuts in batches until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes per side.
- Remove from oil and drain on paper towels.
- Allow to cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- For a sweeter treat, dust with powdered sugar or dip in chocolate glaze.
- Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
