Description

A simple and delicious recipe to make your own homemade pop tarts.


Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
  • 1/4 cup ice water
  • 1 cup fruit jam or filling of choice
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • Powdered sugar (for icing)
  • Milk (for icing)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt.
  2. Add the diced butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Stir in the ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough comes together.
  4. Divide the dough in half, shape into discs, wrap in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Roll out one disc of dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick.
  7. Cut the dough into rectangles and place half of them on a baking sheet.
  8. Place a spoonful of jam in the center of each rectangle on the baking sheet.
  9. Top with another rectangle of dough and seal the edges with a fork.
  10. Brush the tops with the beaten egg.
  11. Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Let cool before icing with a mixture of powdered sugar and milk.

Notes

  • Feel free to use any flavor of jam or filling you prefer.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container.
  • These can be frozen before baking for later use.
