A delightful and traditional British dessert featuring a creamy base topped with a fluffy meringue and fruit jam.

- 4 slices of white bread
- 2 cups of milk
- 1/2 cup of sugar
- 3 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup of fruit jam (raspberry or strawberry)
- 1/4 teaspoon of salt
- Butter for greasing
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Grease a baking dish with butter.
- Trim the crusts off the bread and cut it into small pieces.
- In a saucepan, heat the milk and sugar until the sugar dissolves.
- In a bowl, whisk the eggs and vanilla extract together.
- Slowly add the warm milk mixture to the eggs, stirring constantly.
- Add the bread pieces to the mixture and let it soak for about 10 minutes.
- Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove from the oven and spread the fruit jam on top.
- Whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form and spread over the jam.
- Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the meringue is golden brown.
- Let it cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Serve warm or at room temperature.
- Can be made with different flavors of jam.
- For a richer flavor, use whole milk instead of low-fat milk.
