Ingredients

  • 4 slices of white bread
  • 2 cups of milk
  • 1/2 cup of sugar
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup of fruit jam (raspberry or strawberry)
  • 1/4 teaspoon of salt
  • Butter for greasing

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish with butter.
  3. Trim the crusts off the bread and cut it into small pieces.
  4. In a saucepan, heat the milk and sugar until the sugar dissolves.
  5. In a bowl, whisk the eggs and vanilla extract together.
  6. Slowly add the warm milk mixture to the eggs, stirring constantly.
  7. Add the bread pieces to the mixture and let it soak for about 10 minutes.
  8. Pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove from the oven and spread the fruit jam on top.
  10. Whip the egg whites until stiff peaks form and spread over the jam.
  11. Bake for an additional 10-15 minutes until the meringue is golden brown.
  12. Let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Serve warm or at room temperature.
  • Can be made with different flavors of jam.
  • For a richer flavor, use whole milk instead of low-fat milk.
