Description
A traditional Southern recipe for black eyed peas that is both delicious and easy to prepare.
Ingredients

- 1 pound dried black eyed peas
- 6 cups water
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 smoked ham hock
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
Instructions
- Rinse the black eyed peas under cold water and remove any debris.
- In a large pot, combine the peas and water. Bring to a boil.
- Add the chopped onion, minced garlic, and smoked ham hock to the pot.
- Season with salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper if using.
- Reduce heat to low and simmer for about 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the peas are tender.
- Remove the ham hock, shred the meat, and return it to the pot.
- Stir in olive oil and adjust seasoning if necessary.
- Serve hot, preferably with cornbread.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, omit the ham hock and use vegetable broth.
- Black eyed peas can be soaked overnight to reduce cooking time.
- This dish is often served on New Year’s Day for good luck.
