Description
A classic Southern dish that is crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 whole chicken, cut into pieces
- 2 cups buttermilk
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon paprika
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- Vegetable oil for frying
Instructions
- In a large bowl, soak the chicken pieces in buttermilk for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.
- In another bowl, mix together the flour, paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Remove the chicken from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off, then dredge each piece in the flour mixture, ensuring an even coating.
- Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Carefully add the chicken pieces to the hot oil, frying in batches if necessary to avoid overcrowding.
- Fry the chicken for about 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown and cooked through, turning occasionally.
- Remove the chicken from the oil and place on a wire rack or paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Let the chicken rest for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add hot sauce to the buttermilk marinade.
- Ensure the oil temperature is maintained for even cooking.
- Serve with your favorite sides like coleslaw or cornbread.
