Ingredients

- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and diced
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 6 to 8 tablespoons ice water
- 4 cups thinly sliced apples
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a bowl, mix flour, sugar, and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- Stir in ice water, a tablespoon at a time, until mixture forms a ball. Wrap in plastic and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface and cut into heart shapes.
- In another bowl, combine sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and cornstarch.
- Place a spoonful of the apple mixture on half of the heart shapes, then cover with the remaining hearts. Seal edges with a fork.
- Brush the tops with beaten egg.
- Bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown.
- Let cool before serving.
Notes
- For a sweeter pie, add more sugar to the apple mixture.
- Serve with vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
- These pies can be made ahead of time and frozen.
